If you follow any kind of news, chances are you’ve been seeing Billie Eilish’s name everywhere lately. It seems like she rose to fame in the blink of an eye and is now breaking records at every turn. At the 2020 Grammys, she made history by winning the four biggest awards the show has to offer: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year.
She totally swept the charts in 2019 with her album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” – and struck a major chord with generations old and new. But what makes her so successful and popular? We’ve put together a few reasons.
Her Music
Obviously Billie’s sound is at the top of the list. Billie is all around amazing, but her dark and mysterious musical vibes are what have caught the attention of so many. Her style is quite different than anything people have really heard before, and everyone has fallen in love with it. Her music videos have also made a huge impact. Some of them are borderline terrifying (i.e. when she has a tarantula in her mouth), but her videos contribute to her overall dark, cool-girl vibe. Fans are always left wondering what her next creative project will entail.
Her Family
They say blood is thicker than water, and Billie and her brother Finneas are a prime example. The two create all of her music together, and the support Billie has from her brother and family have no doubt impacted her rise to fame. She even expresses her reliance on Finneas in her newest music video for “Everything I Wanted.” The video opens with text that says “Finneas is my brother and my best friend. No matter the circumstance, we always have and always will be there for each other.”
Her Confidence
The fact that Billie was homeschooled may be a contributing force behind her success. Growing up, she was encouraged to lean into her creativity and avoid conforming into the rest of society. Her expression of self has come at a time when our society seemed to be ready a breath of fresh air. Billie is unapologetically herself, and the public totally embrace it.
Her Style
Billie’s style and personal identity are closely intertwined. Billie has become a huge force in the fashion world and is influencing brands to make clothes that are comfy, baggy, and carefree. She once noted to Harper’s Bazaar that she doesn’t feel comfortable if she’s wearing something boring like jeans and a t-shirt. She feels wrong, out of place, and weird about it. In an interview for an “I Speak The Truth In #MyCalvins” campaign, Billie expressed that she also wears baggy clothes so that no one can judge or comment on her body. Billie’s bold style has earned her praise from fans across the globe.
Her Attitude
Billie’s personality and attitude towards life may be the biggest reason she can’t stop winning. Billie genuinely cares about other people, lives a grounded life, feels deeply, and doesn’t take herself too seriously. She wants to see others succeed and seems to care about making music to express herself, not to earn awards or please anyone else. She’s super open and honest, and doesn’t really seem to care what anybody thinks of her. She’s totally changing our culture for the better.
